Toronto
After the American Revolution, the British Loyalists were the first large influx of newcomers to the site of Toronto. The Irish came next and were the Catholic population in Toronto until 1890, when German, French, Italian, Polish, and eventually Asian Catholics arrived. In 2002, Toronto welcomed Pope John Paul II for World Youth Day. According to a United Nations report, Toronto has the second-highest proportion of immigrants in the world after Miami, Florida and is a very cosmopolitan city. The relative tranquility of these diverse ethnic groups is a testament to the tolerance and multicultural nature of Canadian society. In the second half of the twentieth century, Toronto surpassed Montreal as the economic capital of Canada and is a population centre of five million people.
